Bill Meeuwsen had always enjoyed the outdoors, his family says.
"Bill always loved being outside, playing in the woods, climbing trees, pretending to shoot guns and different things like that," his mother said. "He just loved that kind of thing. He loved camouflage and played army, ever since he was preschool-aged."
He and his father used to hunt and fish together, taking trips to Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. As a child, he played soccer, basketball and other sports.
